How to apply wood grain paint on steel structure

2025-02-28

A few years ago, you might not have thought about the wood grain effect on steel structure, and you might even think it is impossible. But with the increase of market demand, we have improved the technology, making it possible to apply water-based imitation wood grain paint on steel structure. Some friends are asking: Can a primer be applied on the steel structure to make wood grain paint? Obviously, a primer cannot achieve wood grain. Next, let's briefly explain how to apply wood grain paint on steel structure.

1. Base surface treatment

Steel structure, whether it is iron pipe, black pipe, aluminum, stainless steel or galvanized pipe, needs to be treated with anti-rust. The treatment scheme for different pipes is also different, which can be roughly divided into two categories:

1. Rusty: polish, polish off the rust spots and uneven places on the surface, and require flatness. Then use iron red alkyd anti-rust paint as the first anti-rust, and then use epoxy zinc-rich primer as the second anti-rust after drying. These two anti-rust can only be sprayed.

2. Rust-free: Grind and remove the uneven surface, with high flatness requirements, and then spray one or two coats of epoxy zinc-rich primer. Wait for drying.

2. Construction of imitation wood grain paint primer

Although the anti-rust paint is well done, it is inevitable that dust will be stained during the drying process, so we still need to grind the surface when we do the imitation wood grain paint primer. The imitation wood grain paint primer can be sprayed or rolled, and two coats are made. The first coat is thin, and the second coat is even without leakage. Wait for drying.

3. Construction of imitation wood grain paint topcoat

Apply a thin coat with a roller, and then immediately pull out the wood grain with a special tool. If the steel pipe is relatively long, it needs to be constructed in sections.

4. Construction of silicone topcoat

It needs to be carried out after the wood grain effect is completed. It is recommended to use spraying for silicone topcoat construction to ensure that the surface is uniform and without omissions. The question of whether to install first and then construct or to construct first and then install is a question worth thinking about. Generally, if the pipe needs to be welded, it should be installed first and then constructed, and the construction should be carried out after the welding point is accepted. If it is a screwed pipe, it can be constructed first and then installed. It is best to construct on site, except for the environmental protection of transportation. Since the surface has not been completely cured, secondary transportation will damage the surface.
